Rui Zhu To All Instructors

[email protected]

My name is Rey (Rui), and I’m thrilled to join the Eagle River homeschool community as a Chinese teacher. I was born in China and came to the U.S. alone at the age of 16 to study abroad. Since then, I’ve earned my degree from Baylor University and am now pursuing my second graduate degree at Georgia Tech. Alaska has become my home, and I’m excited to share my heritage while also learning from the rich diversity of families in our community.

Through my work with summer camps, the Alaska Chinese Association, and local language programs, I’ve seen how powerful hands-on, interactive learning can be—especially when it comes to language and culture. In my classes, I aim to create a dynamic and immersive experience that goes beyond textbooks. Students might try traditional Chinese calligraphy, learn songs and stories, taste festive foods, practice conversational Mandarin, explore cultural holidays, and even participate in outdoor activities that connect language learning with real life.

I believe that teaching is a two-way street—while I share Chinese language and culture with Alaska’s children, I also gain so much insight and joy from their questions, creativity, and perspectives. My goal is to foster mutual curiosity, respect, and excitement in every lesson.

If you have any questions or would like to learn more about my class offerings, feel free to reach out at [email protected]. I look forward to meeting your family and learning together in the upcoming school year!
